I'm ready to move forward
I have to vent. I hope I do not offend any of you in the process, but I have to get this off my chest. Yesterday, I voted for Obama. I voted for him because I agree with his slogan, I believe it is time for a change and I believe he was the most competent candidate. I believe in what he stands for and most of what he wants to to for our county. I do, however, respect everyone's opinions. If you voted the other way, good for you! So long as you voted. That has nothing to do with why I am so annoyed today. Starting this morning when I walked into work, I noticed my female black coworkers standing around excitedly talking about Obama's win. I get it man, it's history! The country's first black president is a HUGE deal. But when you're at work, WORK..don't spend an hour (literally) standing around going on and on about it. One of my black coworkers says to me...."I still can't wake up from this dream. I am on cloud nine that we may finally have some equality. Did you ever think you would see this day in all of your life, we finally have a black president!?" To which I replied (very nicely mind you)..." I'm just happy we finally have a competent president, I could care less what color he is." She got offended! Am I crazy!? I don't think that was racist. I'm just saying, I would have voted for him if he was asian, russian, black, brown, green. It's his ideals and beliefs that I am behind!! If I can understand and respect why this is such a huge deal for her and other black people int his country, shouldn't she be able to understand and respect that not everyone feels the same way? Sheesh.

Please remind your co-worker that Obama is Half Black/ Half White. He is mixed..he is what the United States represents- diversity!
So if by you saying you dont care what color he is, offends her than i guess you are offending yourself also!
No, you are not off on this, that is what we are supposed to be doing. Focusing on the ideas and values not the color of their skin. She totally interpreted your comment the way SHE wanted to. If she were to really listen, listen! Then I think she would agree with you.
How about my students that told me that they were shooting off their illegal guns when they made the announcement.
Somehow, I don't think Obama would like that;)
Listen everyone is entitled to their opinion. I agree with you, I voted for him for his ideals but I also do recognize that it was a great move forward for the African-American people.
With that being said, I told my students that I don't want to hear any excuses that they use all the time, such as: everyone is racist against blacks, I can't because I am poor, I have no father.
Not acceptable anymore. THANK YOU OBAMA!
I agree with about everything that you wrote about! And I agree with Rebecca since he is half white then you offended yourself as well... She totally took that the way that she wanted to instead of how it was intended. It is historical for this country but at the same time its more than just color, people want a good man as president!
Ahhh thanks ladies. I've been getting so much of this crap the past two days that I thought I was going crazy!
you're gonna find it's gonna be all about him being "black" and a lot of people are gonna conveniently forget his white ancestory.
It's already happening here in my city in Canada! like, WTF? I don't care if he's purple, if he's gonna make the ties between us better and be smarter about it, you can spraypaint yourself banana yellow and I would still think you're the better choice!
i know i'm late
but you're so not off. your coworker is just ignorant.
i mean, don't get me wrong, i'm hispanic, a "minority", and it makes me happy to know that a "minority" was elected as president! BUT if you were to say that to me, i would definitely not be offended, because everyone is entitled to their own opinion. and it's really not all about race.
and to be ignorant myself for a second, sometimes black people need to get off their high paranoid horses and stop thinking that the world is out to get them because they're black.
;)
