Blog design....

So, I have no idea how to make this thing fancy. I don't even know how to add my favorite blogs to the side of my page like some of you girls have done. I'm lucky I have figured out as much as I have. Help! I chose a template from the blogger site, but I want to change it. What the hell am I doing wrong!?
